Mistral AI raises €3 billion, valued at more than €21 billion, with Samsung taking a stake
The French startup announces its largest funding round, €3 billion (about $3.5 billion), in a round led by Samsung Electronics, report Le Monde and Bloomberg. The valuation tops €21 billion, a record for an AI company in Europe. The deal comes as several experts fault Mistral for leaving the race for frontier models to focus on data centers and industrial deployment. Its CEO Arthur Mensch rejects that charge, says the company keeps producing top-tier models and considers himself still undervalued, betting on the eventual win of open-weight models (which you can download and run yourself). Samsung's entry, a Korean manufacturer, alongside European investors, anchors a bet: build in Europe both the compute infrastructure and the uses, without depending on the American and Chinese giants.
